ALTERED BRAIN ACTIVITY IN AUTISTIC CHILDREN VERSUS HEALTHY CONTROLS WHILE PERFORMING SIMPLE TASKS USING fMRI by Donald Martin Adams, Jr. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies dealing with Autistic children have primarily been concerned with cognitive facial recognition. Recent studies have demonstrated that Autistic children, when compared to healthy matched controls, exhibit higher neuronal activity when identifying patterns or objects, but lower levels of activity in regards to facial recognition. The objective of this study was to examine both facial and object recognition and compare them to simple sensorimotor tasks. All subjects were administered 5 stimuli each lasting 320 seconds. Subjects were instructed to use a button press box to identify between a Person/Object and an Arrow/Object. They were then asked to complete three simple sensorimotor tasks of Mouth Open/Closed, Eyes Left/Right, and Eyes Open/Closed. It was hypothesized that matched healthy controls would show a higher level of activation, specifically in the frontal gyrus. Attention was focused on the middle frontal gyms and the inferior frontal gyms, of both the left and right sides of the brain. Temporal correlations between these 4 regions-of-interest (ROIs) were examined for all 5 stimuli. A ttest was then performed across subjects to reveal differences in correlation coefficients between the 4 ROIs in relation to these two subject groups. The investigation demonstrated reduced overall activation, as well as reduced correlation coefficients among the 4 ROIs, in Autistics when compared to healthy matched controls. These findings suggest that Autistics may have compromised connectivity between these brain regions. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore brain function: cortical representations of language critical areas

Pre-operative determination of the dominant hemisphere for speech and speech associated sensory and motor regions has been of great interest for the neurological surgeons. This dilemma has been of at most importance, but difficult to achieve, requiring either invasive (Wada test) or non-invasive methods (Brain Mapping). In the present study we have employed functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging...

Brain Activity Map Extraction of Neuromyelitis Optica Patients Using Resting-State fMRI Data Based on Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations and Regional Homogeneity Analysis

Introduction: Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is a rare inflammatory disease of the central nervous system which generally affecting the spinal cord and optic nerve. Damage to the optic nerve can result in the patient's dim vision or even blindness, while the spinal cord damage may lead to sensory and motor paralysis and the weakness of the lower limbs in the patient. Magnetic Reson...

The hemodynamic response in children with Simplex Autism

BACKGROUND Numerous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of the brain-bases of autism have demonstrated altered cortical responses in subjects with autism, relative to typical subjects, during a variety of tasks. These differences may reflect altered neuronal responses or altered hemodynamic response. This study searches for evidence of hemodynamic response differences by using ...

Feature Selection Based on Genetic Algorithm in the Diagnosis of Autism Disorder by fMRI

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) occurs based on the continuous deficit in a person’s verbal skills, visual, auditory, touch, and social behavior. Over the last two decades, one of the most important approaches in studying brain functions in autistic persons is using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Objectives: It is common to use all brain regions in functional extracti...
